Midnight Manor is a haunted Victorian Manor that is one of the attractions at Terrorplex in the DFW area in Texas. Here are some construction pics of one of our new rooms, a take on the 'ol pick the correct door with a hidden wall twist and a Victorian theme.

looks like a good start...looks like nice and solid construction! Love those types of rooms. Have one at the haunt I work for, we have it with dark halls leading from a central room of doors. We call it the "Scooby Doo" maze. Even the actors get lost sometimes...lol.

More Manor build pictures. My name is Cesar and I started working with Scott at Terrorplex a few months ago. Scott added a runner down one of the hallways and we put a half wall for a actor and a fake wall. Pretty much ready to paint next. Picture quality is a bit poor...we were working at night. I don't know what the heck I am thinking working at a haunted house at night...heh. Scott says I will eventually get used to it. Still gives me the creeps.

We're gonna black it out this week, then start detailing to our Victorian mansion theme, it's coming along well, have to get done quickly as we're also rebuilding our 4th attraction into a Wolfman themed haunt. So much to do, so little time to do it in.

about working in a haunted house at night is that particle board! Those little slivers of half-glued wood might have come from trees on top of an indian burial ground.
Chief Flyinyour Face and his brave Cutting Woodchip wait to attack when you least expect it!
(I hate osb! I recently dismantled some old walls here, I had used real plywood and they came apart and salvaged so well that I had those large pieces to re-use, no problem)
I have had osb suck up 12 coats of paint before they looked decent.
Maybe there's a "trick" to it?

Dr Spooktakular
04-25-2010, 11:29 PM
No trick, I just paint the smooth side, then the bottom will have paneling made out of fence boards and the top will be wallpapered. No OSB will be exposed, except on the other side of the walls and that area will be pitch black. I am honored to have the great Jim Warfield comment on one of my posts.

Looks great! What are you using for the bricks there?

Dr Spooktakular
05-31-2010, 07:46 PM
We used styrofoam, dremel tooled them, based them with black, then different shades of red, then distressed. I showed the theater kids at the school I teach at how to do this and when they were done with them, I took them to the haunt.

Here's some pics of a forest scene we've started. When completed the walls will have camo netting, fencing, vines, tree branches, etc... There will also be an old shack in one corner and a cemetery at the other end of the forest with a mausoleum that you can see through into another scene.

We used old fence paneling and cut out each piece and then over-layed each piece like real siding. Window and porch are next up.

Looking good man!!

We had the same room design in our event last year. It really messed up a lot of customers trying to figure out how to get out.

Ours was really simple too, but it couldnt be used on our really busy night. We couldnt cycle customers thru fast enough.

I hope it works out good for you guys though!

These are two projects that Scott has me working on...the first picture is bricking a hallway into the catacombs. Didn't take a before pic, but just imagine the walls were smooth and white. The next few pics are a project I am working in the Manor. It's going to be a funeral parlor. Laying down the wood work right now. Bear in mind this is my first year working in a pro-haunt.

At the opposite end of the woods/shack, we're doing a small cemetery with a crypt entrance that you look into, which look into another scene which is the inside of the crypt. These pics don't look like much but will be real nice one everything is put together. The crypt is 2x4 frames with styrofoam skins.

Funeral Parlor Build on Manor update, painted and brick added tonight...

Dr Spooktakular
07-19-2010, 02:15 AM
These are our asylum halls. Allen Hopps suggested using egg crate bedding, but I came into some carpet padding and thought I would give it a try. I've put 3 layers of padding on the hallway walls and we'll be attaching sheets soon to finish the look. We attached the walls by driving roofing nails with a blue cap through a 1"x1" piece of carpet, then into the wall. If you don't use carpet or a small piece of cardboard or something, the nails just tear the padding.

More Funeral Parlor pictures from Midnight Manor. Been painting and moving stuff around. Put up a picture frame where I am going to put up a collage of old photos of people and families...on a weird side note....a stain on the ceiling that you can see in one of the pictures has formed for some odd reason. It's not a leak and we can't tell where it came from....its very odd.

My head build guy, GreatCeasarsGhost, has been working on several new upgrades/projects. Our haunt is in a trailer, so we're limited in many ways and have to be super creative on the other side. We'll have some finished photos of several rooms soon.
Thanks for all the compliments from everyone!

Is that casket made out of Styrofoam?

GreatCaesarsGhost
08-14-2010, 12:54 AM
No, not Styrofoam. I want to say Fiberglass. They are pretty dam heavy. One of them even came with vatican burial sheets which was quite odd! Dr. Spooktakular should know the exact material it is made of but they are authentic.

Dr Spooktakular
08-14-2010, 01:15 AM
Those are authentic burial caskets made from fiberglass, they weigh about 200lbs each, they were not much fun squeezing them into a 8x8 room. I finished the room tonight and the walkway goes around and between 2 caskets.

"Still gives me the creeps." LOL, that is too funny! Just a lot of walls in place that i see...no props yet. Is it the hallways that ya'll built that look creepy or you hearing & or seeing things? Sounds like the place might be haunted....for REAL!

Nah, just kidding on all accounts, when I first started working at Death Row years back, we were located in an actual prison! Talk about the CREEP factor setting in and screwing with my head! Yeah, just like Scott says, you'll get used to it.

I'm starting to get used to it now, but there are a few rooms that still give me the creeps. I will hear the occasional thump and creek here and there. Honestly, manor itself is creepy. I have not seen things yet, but I am sure Emily will eventually make an appearance. Emily is a ghost that other actors have seen a few rooms over from where the room I am working on.

Is there an opening in the wall behind 1 of the clown heads for an actor to
put there head into it?? Just curious: :)

No hole in wall, that would be a great idea, but another part of the clown room is on the other side.

Did a little goring up in the kitchen today. The kitchen just needed a decent make-over. I used acrylic paints mixed with stuff like 15 bean soup beans, saw dust, various beans, crushed corn flakes, mixed with shellac and polyurthane mixture. It's just a start, but what I did tonight turned out nice for round 1.

Great Pictures - Great Job

Just one question...maybe I am just not seeing it....are there sprinklers in this attraction?? If not how do you manage to get away with that? Here in northern Michigan we can't have anything over 1000 Sq Feet without having a sprinkler system - I have noticed a few haunts without them and just wondering if there are certain states that don't require them.

Allen H
09-17-2010, 12:29 AM
Texas has county and city codes which are very different, most county codes do not require sprinklers unless you will have 1000 people inside at once. There are a ton of different rules for different kind of structures and they change from city to city and city to county.
Allen H
(Sorry to answer for you Scott, but Im in TX now and learned it was very different here)

Thanks! Scott and I have been working hard this off season to even add more detail. Pics coming soon. Someone asked me today in a room I was detailing..."Your still not finished with this room?"...I replied..."man...I'll never be finished with this room...next year I will probably add on to it."...:D
