As some of you may know, just before Transworld I received some devastating news. Through no fault of their own the farm Haunted Overload is located on can no longer host the event. I was bumming because we were just hitting our stride at that location and there were some awesome plans in the works for this year. Anyway, I walked around in a daze for about a day or two trying to figure out what to do this late in the season. I started searching the Internet and found a 120 acre apple orchard just a few miles down the same road. I didn't even know it existed before. I fired off an email proposal and hoped for the best.

To make a long story short we are now full steam ahead moving down the road to one of the creepiest patches of woods I have ever seen. This road in the photos below is only a small part of it. Once we get all our giant props and sets in there the lighting possibilities will be insane. I'm really looking forward to this new location because the haunt will look completely different. I will be able to be very creative in the way we build our sets in these woods and the scare factor will definitely be turned up a few notches in there. There is a clear patch on the outside for the biggest props and queue line to be set up.

Here are a few photos of the very start of the take down and moving of the first hillbilly shed. The old haunt looks like a bomb hit it as it gets dismantled.

My posting may be sporadic this season as I will have my hands full trying to kick some ass on this project. I'll post our progress as much as I can. I'm looking forward to watching Shane's progress as well so I'll try to keep up, lol.

Good luck to everyone this season, it will be tons of work but an awesome and much more scary set up when it's done.

Enjoy,

Eric

Sometimes bad things happen for a good reason.
Last year a fellow haunter I considered a friend stole our location out from under us!!
Losing a 10 year friendship was as hard as losing the location.
We were forced to scramble and pulled a location at the last minute.
We ended up doing better than the previous year, several people check on our old location and it looks like they didn't do very well!!!

Karma can be a bitch!!!

Looks like it will be a major pain in the as#, put you will be better off in the end!!!

Better to learn this now instead of in August!!! Hang in there, good luck!!

Thanks a lot for the support everyone! Damon and Adam, it was great to talk to you at Transworld. Adam, the nursery sound effect CD and others I bought from you will be the perfect sound track for a scene I have planned. Eerie sounds of kids crying in the woods will send shivers down peoples spines. It's an awesome CD. Wayne, I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to you much this time at TW. the time flew by.

Shane, we do have a lot in common this year. We will both be up to our eyeballs with setting up new haunts. It's going to be fun to watch each others progress. Thanks for the awesome time at the party and Fearfest trip, it was a blast. Anyone who missed Shane's party this year make it a point to attend next year, it was great!

SpookywoodsFX, to answer your question. I search for farms in NH and found their website. http://www.demeritthillfarm.com/

I wrote them an e mail telling them I had to move and that they were the very first ones I was contacting. I sent on line reviews, photos and videos to them so they would know what they were in for if they took us on. Turns out they had been wanting to do a haunt for years but never had the time or know how. They had even been to Transworld Chicago years before. Instead of rent, we agreed on a % of the profit. If I have a good year, they will have a good year and vice versa. They see the value of having us at the farm bringing in so many more people in the fall.

I plan to cross promote with my old location and also buy Hay bails, pumpkins and cornstalks. Being right down the road will make life a lot easier for me.

My wife asked me what keeps me going on all this. After all, I have a full time job with hellasious 60 mile commute each way. I just killed myself for 3 years building this haunt up only to have to start all over.

Here is some of the answers below.

We have these patches on our cast jackets with a version of our pumpkin logo. Two of my actors went and got the design tattooed. I couldn't believe it. Now that's dedication for you! In fact more on the crew want to get different versions and my video guy wants to tape the next one for a promo piece, lol! Insane, I just wish I had thought of it first. How can I quit now? lol!

Also I just saw this killer review of our attraction. He just put it up last night, it really made my day and makes me want to strive to kick as much ass as possible at the new place. I wrote him and asked if he would mention the new location in the review and he did it right away.

Hey Eric,

I'm really glad to hear you found another great location this year I'm sure you'll create an even better show this year.

Also, that was a great review of your haunt. From a guests' perspective reading that I would be excited to come out too!

Congrats on your successes!

Thanks Allan! I'm very excited about this new location. I always wanted to do a haunt in the woods and now it's coming true.

I made a scale model today of the new 24 foot entrance way to the woods. It took a long time to figure out how I was going to build it. The whole thing comes apart so I can show people the under structure and remember myself what materials I will need, how many 6x6 beams etc. I build the model 1 inch = 1 foot scale so in the field I can just measure the pieces and that makes it real easy to cut the beams and figure out the angles.

I opened this in Photoshop so I could play with the proportions. I wanted to make the eyes bigger and more evil looking. The nose I want to move down. I will be able to make these adjustments in the field when we are building it now that I have the mock up photo. I went a step further and played with how I want to light it. I'll have fog coming out of the mouth like crazy. I did it last year in a facade and it was a big hit. I like lighting up the fog, it looks great in the mouth when people walk in. I have it shooting straight down, and the actor has a remote to give patrons a blast as they enter. There are two trees at the site that will frame the structure so I added them in the mock up so I could get an idea of what people will see when they walk up.

Enjoy,

Eric

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm kind of forced to. I could never wing it on a building like this. I approach it like a building first and sculpture second. I go through each step in my mind with the model to see if it will even work. Then I know exactly what and how many of each beam I will need and calculate cost. Also I can figure out the best way to actually build it and the steps in order because it's not like building a house where there is a set way of doing things. For instance, I will build the eye sockets on the ground so I can get a nice mean shape. Then install them on the structure.

Building this also gets me excited to get going on the project because I can see it finished in my mind already. I'll keep you posted.

A little more progress was made today. The first photo is the barn at the new location for storage. We started transporting and hanging pops in there. The barn is really creepy as it is.

We also figured out the exact placement for the new facade today. These photos show us bringing over the front porch to the first hillbilly shed and some walls to another.

I try and find the oldest boards I can for sheds like that one. Those particular boards have special meaning to me. They were sawed by my grandfather I think in the early 80's on his home made saw mill. They sat under cover for years because he always intended to build a smaller house with them. At the age of 98 he gave them to me for the haunt and I was psyched! He turns 101 in July and gets a kick out of seeing the sheds I made from his wide pine boards. They look better every year and turn a nice gray color when the sun beats on them for a while.

This is how we moved that shed the last two years.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/shed-1.jpg

I love the like making things with this wood. My grand father wont be around forever and it's cool to have his boards as part of the haunt. Here is a big Haunted Overload sign being made with them. I made the edges really rough and painted the logo on the front. It looked cool and better than a vinyl banner. I also made the coffins for the Soul Taker's Burial ground with them.

Here is my grandfather helping carve pumpkins at one of my home haunts, 2001 I believe.

I gotta ask - what's that red thing with eight tires?

elowther
04-22-2010, 05:55 AM
That is a crazy machine he made to travel through the woods. It didn't have a steering wheel. It worked like a bull dozer by stopping one set of wheels and pivoting on the other. It was like a tank and could go anywhere, especially with chains on the tires . He used to plow snow with it also.

Pretty wild contraption, it looks like they had fun on it.

LOL! Funny you should ask that about the rocks. First I tried making stone steps using these smaller ones. I struggled for an hour and a half and finally said the hell with it. There was a massive boulder which you can see as the step now over on the stone wall about 150 feet away. Tom thought I was insane for wanting to get it. It took many hours to move it the 150 feet with crow bars but it was well worth it. The steps look cool and are mighty solid.

When it rains it pours.

I got laid off a few weeks ago which was a major blow because I had to stop on the haunt to look for jobs. I found a temp job for now but it's 2 hours away. They will let me do 4 10 hour days. I have some other irons in the fire, we'll see how it all pans out but the timing sucks because I had all my vacation put in for October at my old job. I don't start until the 15th so that will give me a full week to work on the haunt.

Yesterday we started on a cool bridge to go up a steep embankment. Even though we have a long way to go I am happy with the progress so far. I'll post more pics soon.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/Haunted%20Overload%202010/IMG_30001.jpg

That is a 12 foot step ladder so this one will be about 14 feet high when complete. It looks even taller because you are coming up the hill at it.

This photo was taken last night. We built a new shed with an extreme leaning angle and on a hill. There is an incredible optical illusion if you lean in the other direction in the doorway it looks like you are defying gravity. This will be a fun effect to play with as far as characters and lighting.

It was absolutely horrifying in those woods last night. I think many people might turn back this year, lol!

Its funny, I was showing my wife pics of the haunt location and what you had already accomplished and the look of horror that was on her face was priceless! Her reply to the pics also brought a smile to my face, as it should for you. And I quote, " there is no way in hell that you would catch me helping there. Even during the day!" LOL I really think you got a #1 Haunt location this year! I might even fly out to see it since i have many friends in the Manchester area. Keep the pictures coming!

Here are a few more photos. I start my new job Tuesday so I might not have time to post for a while. It is 2 hour drive each way. I'll be staying in a hotel a few nights a week up there.

It rained all weekend but we still managed to get the new crooked shed looking good. In person, looking at it head on makes you dizzy because of the angles. Hard to tell from the photo but it's weird. Still more detailing to go but it's looking cool I think. I may have a swinging light at the peak to make it even more crazy looking.

On to bigger projects soon. I had to redesign the entrance way so as not to have patrons walking across conservation easement land. The commission came around and didn't want us walking on that grass. The new design will actually be cool because the main facade will be on that creepy road inside the woods.

Meeting with the fire marshal tomorrow to go over the new design.

Wally running the auger. That thing really gets a workout. When it hits a root it about breaks you in half if you don't brace it against your leg.

A little more done.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/IMG_0506.jpg

Almost finished. Check out the boards in the back. I may back light it so the beams of light come through the cracks. We'll see.

Wicked work, as usual. When was that lean shack photo taken of Tom? - you posted it a couple of weeks ago, and Tom is wearing an insulated shirt, are you kidding me? It's 90 degrees and 90% humidity at midnight down here, you guys make me sick. It looks as though you actually have a Spring with chilly nights. UGH.

Thanks for the support everyone! Twin, it was taken only 2 or 3 weeks ago. New England weather is very unpredicatable. We had a really warm spring followed by a late frost. This resulted in most of the apple crop at our new location being destroyed. It's been one thing after another this year. I'm sitting in a hotel now because I had to take a job two hours away. I can't wait to get home tomorrow night and start kicking ass on the haunt again this weekend. Slow and steady wins the race Shane, lol! We have a very small crew so we just have to keep at it. Last Saturday we spent a whole day on a deck for the bridge. I'll try to get some photos this time. My batteries went dead in my camera.

I did manage to get an HHA ad for Fangoria magazine done though. My home computer is wicked slow and I had to use the photos I had on hand because the deadline was tight but I think it came out cool. The top Photo is of Ben.

It should increase awareness of haunts by being on the news stands.

Let me know what you think.

I hope to report back soon on when to expect your links to be up. Thanks for your patience and for bringing it to our attention.

I'm back home now and need to get to bed so I can get to the haunt early in the am. I lined up a great electrician, (Nate Moss) and we will be going over plans tomorrow. http://www.mosselectricllc.com/home

OblivionHauntedHouse and Jordan24,

The HHA recently sent out its annual membership renewal email blast through Transworld and we will be purging the member database in the next few weeks then sending the 2010 haunted attraction member list over to Brainstorm Studios to be added to the website haunt listings.

Thanks for your support in helping the HHA protect and promote the Haunted House Industry.

Feel free to contact me @ dunnerite@aol.com if you have any questions or concerns.

Right now is a great time to renew your HHA membership if you have not done so already as the board has been working hard for the membership improving existing programs and adding new ones that will benifit all of us.

BTW Eric thanks for the killer graphics on the new Fango ad and your new location and layout looks amazing buddy! The whole Fright Kingdom crew is good to go whenever you need a hand...just say the word.

I grew up outside of Manchester NH, in New Boston and I am so disappointed that I dont live there now. Wisconsin is a long way to drive for a haunt, but I just might have to pull the trigger and make a road trip one of these years! this is amazing! You are defiantly one to aspire to!

When Eric said Haunted Overload he meant Haunted Overload! I cant believe some of the stuff they do! Eric dont kill yourself. Literally I am being sincere here. Some of this could actually kill you if something went wrong. Not saying it will but anything is possible. Just wondering how deep you are burying those trees? How deep do you have to put them so they dont come down. And if it rains is there a chance the soil can shift or erode and make them fall. This is all new to me? Would it be any easier to just take a tree. Remove all branches ect.? I guess not depending on how tall it is. Its just really all amazing!
Keep up the great work!

I'm not even in the same zip code of experience with Eric, I mean that literally, not sarcastically; but I'm like Damon and start thinking of rain and all these worste case scenarios with the logs shifting.

From post #71 second photo down through the fourth, it looks like that log is nearly 50% under grade. I was going to say that the minimum I'd be comfortable with was 40% of total length under grade. That may be different logs in #71 not a progression of one, I can barely see a bifurcation at the top cut but the close up looks less straight than the full length shot in photo number two.

When I was a kid we got a guy with a wrecker to help us sink some medium sized telephone poles, about 16" diameter, for a makeshift basketball court on a farm. We put the post for the goal in a single large back of quickcrete and the one for a mounted light in a dry hole.

Over time, the one in the dry hole began to have some sway from erosion but even after years, it had only eroded to a little larger than the original hole and still wasn't really leaning. The shear weight of these may help it seat in the hole, or may make it more likely to rip the hole after erosion, I can't guess.

It also looked like the back hoe was tamping around the logs, that goes a farther than one may think toward solidifying that grade. I trust Eric's formula, just enjoy this type of construction myself and speculating. More great scenes, keep the posts coming!!

Thank you for the comments and interest in this thread. Yeah, the name kind of says it all about the overload part. It's an overload of work that's for sure, lol!

The trees aren't going anywhere, trust me. The excavator tamps the ground like nothing you have ever seen. These are actually stronger than living trees because they are in the ground much deeper and don't have branches or leaves to catch the wind like a sail. All the ones at the old location are going on their 4th year with no signs of failure. In a few years they will be cut down and something else built or put in their place. Therefore, they will not be in the ground long enough to rot.

Here are a few bonus photos.

Sketch of some stick monster heads.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/IMG_3107.jpg

One of the the heads starting to take shape. Just chicken wire and Great Stuff. It will be much more detailed when finished.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/IMG_3109.jpg

Stick monster fingers and the start of a vampire head in the background. I doubt I'll finish the vampire this year because of the move and all the new buildings this season.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/IMG_3113.jpg

Some articulated fingers for new pumpkin monsters. They will be about 14 to 16 feet tall.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/IMG_3114.jpg

It will be another scorcher of a weekend and we will be out there building like crazy. I'll try to post when I can. Enjoy,

Eric

Why is smiling malevolence always scarier, or is it? For me the smiling face is always more creepy and sinister, those designs will be great new additions.

There you go, I had a feeling the tamping was the key. I can only imagine a skilled operator slamming the flat side of that bucket on the ground. Some people are artists on graders and backhoes, it's definately not a first day skill.

Hi all,

I thought I would share some pics of the mine car I am building to go out in front of the Mine Shaft entrance. It still needs wheels and a little more detail work but you can get the idea I was going for. Most of what I used to build this was leftover wood scraps & junk laying around the H.O. build site. I always enjoy trying to make something from almost nothing!

Talk about a gold mine! We found these old cars and a truck down a steep embankment on another part of the farm. Thank God for the excavator to get them out. I didn't want these to go to waste. They look awesome in the woods and I have a great scare planned for that scene. It got too dark to take a photo of the whole scene the way the cars are set up now but here is the process of getting the rusted hulks out and into position.

I hate that you are having to go the trouble of moving, but I know you will take that challenge and make it an opportunity to make your haunt even more awesome than it was before (although, I don't know if that is possible, judging from the pictures I saw last year).

Good luck, and be careful using all that heavy equipment!

Thanks for the comments guys! Yeah, going down the road with the reapers was fun.

Damon, funny you should mention that big reaper skull. That was one of the first big props I made for my home haunt in 2003. I had no money so it is made of wood, chicken wire, electrical conduit, burlap and Monster Mud. The thing is heavy as hell but it only cost around $100.00 in supplies to make. It has gone through many different looks over the years. I'm surprised I'm still using it but I always seem to find a spot for it each season. With different lighting, paint jobs and teeth, it always looks cool.

Here are some shots of it through the years. I already have a spot for it at our new home. The trail is getting longer by the day. I'll have to measure it sometime, lol!

Enjoy,

Eric

Thanks for the support everyone, it's a tough year that's for sure. Here are some shots of the electrical going into the woods. This is where a lot of my budget will go for this season, it's a real long run as you can tell. Much more to go to get the actual haunt powered up. It will come right down to the wire, LOL!

Enjoy,

Eric

Looks good we here at the Hollow are fans of your work Eric.
To all those rebuilding this year keep at it you can make it just think of the smile that will cross your face when you hear the first cutomers scream of terror. Shane I have faith you will make it, and plan on trying to swing by some time this season to see the place.

Does your local fire marshal require you to do anything special when you put a completely enclosed building on your trail, like the one in the picture??

It all looks GREAT, by the way!

The small shed you are in and out in 2 seconds so that's no problem. My other tunnels only go 50 feet before you come out and then go back in again. Also there are no permanent roofs on them just fire proof fabric so they can't be considered buildings. Only the very front of that mine shaft has boards on it then it starts the cloth. I have a great fire marshal and every location is different so check with yours before doing anything. I have had them come out to check all along the way.

Here is a new tee shirt design I did tonight. We may put glow in the dark ink in the skull image for the back.

Hello again!
I have been working with Eric at Haunted Overload for the past 4 years now, helping with construction and as an actor. When I heard that we had to move our location for the season of 2010 I was shocked! but I was not worried. I knew that Eric would somehow make this year just as exciting as the past years have been. and as you all can see from the pictures of the new haunt, its going to be one of the SCARIEST years HO has ever seen!
Eric makes all my spooky halloween dreams to come true! every year he creates a terrifying world where I can Scare the LIFE out of people!

ERIC LOWTHERS HAUNTED OVERLOAD IS GOING TO BE UNREAL AT THE NEW LOCATION!!!! THIS IS GOING TO BE A YEAR TO REMEMBER!!!!

You and the other actors are what really make Haunted Overload something special. I love to make a playground for the actors to do their thing, it's cool.

Eric what safety precautions do you take when you make these gigantic monters. What if the wrong person saw this and tried to duplicate it and got hurt? Not sayin this will happen but its always a posibility. I dont think I personally would want to be 50 ft in the air on a ladder tryin to put one of these things together. Just wondering. Hope you dont take any offense to me asking.

What type of lighting do you use in your pumkins

elowther
07-15-2012, 10:18 PM
Wow, I can't believe this thread has been brought back from so long ago. The haunt is so much more built up now.

Anyway, I have used different methods over the years depending on the size and or my budget at the time. For small ones I have used night lights with a chicken wire cage around them and a plastic bag spray painted yellow or orange. Since our attraction is outdoors the bag keeps the water out and the paint gives the light a nice color. Just make sure the kind of nightlight doesn't get too hot.

For big pumpkins I have used a flouresent 100 watt bulb with yellow or and or orange gel material over it to give it a deep colored glow.

Hope this helps,

Eric
