Time to start the annual progress thread again. It's the end of February and I feel slightly behind. I Worked on the website pages this weekend. We will start off slowly on props today. I'll post what we do on those soon. Cool plans in the works for this year.

Website pages and animated gif. We got the home page working last night. Dan Thomas is working on the new photo galleries this week. Look at the banner for at least 5 seconds to see it change.

Thanks guys! I hope people can get some inspiration or the thread will spark a few ideas along the way. It's always hard to start off on props. It feels like I just cleaned up from last season, lol! I only have time to post 4 photos tonight of some of the work we started today. In the coming weeks when I have time on the weekend I will go into more detail or answer questions as they come up.

The first score of the day was when we went over to my father's house to get some 2x4's I had been saving. We are making a new train yard scene with giant freight train this year. I couldn't believe these two sections of real railroad track were in the shed. My father had been cutting up the old saw mill. My grandfather had used these rails to hold the logs in place years ago on his home made mill.

Anyway these things weigh about 1,000 pounds each. It should be interesting getting them to the haunt.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/IMG_0069.jpg

I wanted to start off with something easy. We are building 15 new body bags. The goal here is to try and build them really cheap. The wood was from a dumpster, the small heads I had given to me. I'll go into detail later on how these will be put together.

Walley is showing the wood and small heads of the new body bags. We are also expanding our reaper section. The bigger heads are for 10 new reaper figures. We actually started them last year. I'll post photos of the beginning when I dig them out. They are big Styrofoam one piece skulls. We cut the jaws off and reattached them in an open position. Secured a piece of plastic pipe and foamed it in place. This is a perfect base to sculpt over. Teeth will be sculpted as well.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/IMG_0071.jpg

I only got one half finished today because I was setting people up cutting the pieces for the body bags and teeth sculpting.

My wife came home to find a bunch of people in the cellar making props, lol!

Hi everyone! I wanted to add a couple of costume progress photos to the thread. This is a character I'm working on with one of our actors. She wanted to do a sort of forest witch/troll creature. We opted for lots of fall colors with a hint of sage green. There's still a bit to be done. The costume will need to be distressed, and we'll be adding lots of natural touches, like bones and beads and dangly doodads. (She also wasn't able to wear some of the warmer pieces because it was about 80 degrees when we took the photos.) This was just a basic makeup for the pictures. We're working on some prosthetic pieces and a ratty cloak for her next.

This is the first giant project we will be working on. It will be 30 feet tall. Scale model finished, it will be painted white for contrast. We will start this weekend. My goal is to get it built by the end of April so we can get on to the main scenes.

Very nice and inspirational.
What advice does Grandpa have for the rest of us to see 103?
Many years ago (as in a past life!) I was working in the house of a 95 yr. old man. His "secret" to his longevity was as follows:
"I never smoked.
I never drank.
And I never let anything bother me....(There;s the tough one!)
He lived a block from my Parent's house and within that tiny neighborhood also lived his two sisters !(In their own houses)

I'm with Jim. Grandpa looks great for 103. I think you need to take the show on the road. You need to come to the Midwest so we can get a better view. It should be an easy road trip, not like your props are that big and all.:-P Thanks for sharing the pics with us. Dan

Your builds always look AWESOME! If I could pick one haunt to own out of the entire haunt world forums, it would be yours (with all due respect to the other awesome haunts out there!).

You'd better hope you never tick-off the owner of the farm... Can you imagine having to move all those giant structures to a new location?!? :)

I totally ran out of time last year to start the sawmill scene. Finally starting it now.
Using my grandfathers giant saw blades will make it very authentic looking to say the least.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/2a.jpg

I bought 8 piles of distressed lumber from a local saw mill. This pile is like a gold mine to be used for the main beams.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/3a.jpg

Late night sinking the first few beams.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/4a.jpg

elowther
07-05-2012, 03:02 PM
The structure is starting to take shape.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/1b.jpg

See what I mean about these old beams, they look awesome? They even smell old, you would swear the structure had
been there for years. This will be an open air concept design. The walls will be high so you will still get the feeling on enclosure. I want it to look like the frame and walls of an old barn that had partially caved in with the old sawmill inside.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/2b.jpg

Starting the carrier for the mill. I'm glad we had this giant beam, it looks so authentic.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/3b.jpg

The carrier taking shape. The new wood is for structure and will be covered with distressed lumber to look good.
Check out my grandfathers contraption in the lower right corner. He used to use it for welding supplies and the
compressor mounted on top for painting. Now it, the blade and some of the wood that he sawed with it are all in the haunt.
I can't wait to show him the finished photos of the mill.

We have many projects going on at once now. Here are a few more in progress.
I like these small sheds because they go up fast and add a lot of detail to the haunt. Patrons wont even go in this one. I call it creative fencing. This building will provide a blockade and even more sense of enclosure in the hillbilly section.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/1c.jpg

Working on the tin roof.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/2c.jpg

Looking pretty creepy now and didn't take long to complete.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/ericlowther/3c.jpg

The caboose is getting there as well. I can't wait to start making this look old and rundown. While building this, a friend told me about an old caboose in the woods of Connecticut where she grew up. Indians had over run the train, scalped everyone aboard, threw some in the coal furnace etc. The train was just jeft there and the trees all grew up around it. I thought I may
use that as inspiration for a back story to our Death Junction scene.

The inside of this will act as an actor staging area / make up room on the inside of the haunt for touch ups etc.

Put in a real long day Saturday. We will be back there tomorrow.
Worked on the sawmill all day, it was extremely hot and humid. We finally started getting on a roll late so we stayed till 1:30am. It's a big project but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

This photo shows the beams made to look like rotted roof joists. They look cool from below, lighting will be very important for this scene. It's starting to look like a real old barn with caved in roof now.

Thanks Allen!

I can't take credit for the gypsy wagon. Rae Enslin, our costume director and other volunteers did that.
I think it came out great! I love having talented people on the team doing their own projects. It's totally different than what I would do and it gives the haunt some good variety. I designed that giant cactus looking head but it's a team effort many hands went into the building of this. I don't want to show too much of it until it's finished but it looks insane when you come around the corner of the trail even in this unfinished state. There is a mock up a few pages back it will have giant horns sticking out of it made from foam and painted white.

I happened to be in the Boston area for business and had tonight free before catching a flight tomorrow. Made an hour and a half drive (each way) to go see Haunted Overload. Been watching the pictures for years now, and was always impressed by how well everything photographed. It looks even more spectacular live. This event is truly unique, and the visuals are breathtaking. So glad I decided to make the trip out there. Sets a very high bar for what can be done on a haunted trail, but I actually learned a ton applicable even to lower budget shows.

Thanks HauntedMemphis! Glad you made the trip out and enjoyed it!

I hope everyone had a good season!

We are getting ready for our staff wrap party on the 17th. I'm going through the photos now to give Tim for the video. Here are a few more. I'm so thankful for Artifact Images, they do a great job with the challenges of haunt lighting. Almost time to start the actor appreciation thread.

Enjoy,

Eric

The four of us that built this 4 story monster are pictured here in the mouth. Dan Thomas, Me, Tom Sadowski and Wallace Valley. The massiveness of this thing doesn't really convey in these photos but the thing looks pretty cool from the ground when people come around the corner. Ran out of time for the cactus spines all over it. Maybe next year.

Thanks for sharing. Please tell me someone walks thru and video tapes the haunt. It has to be one of the most unique haunts I've seen. Someday I will make it out east. And your haunt will be at the top of the can't miss list. Amazing haunt. Dan

Thanks John! I figured I would post a few more of the new buildings I showed in this thread with the lighting. I will start a new post for 2013 when that is underway. We are going to demolish the facade with the horns and revamp the queue line first.

Train tunnel, about 20 feet tall.

Death Junction after you go through the train tunnel.

New covered bridge. A troll was in there of course.

I like these small crooked buildings. I call them creative fencing. They add a lot of character to the haunt while providing blockades for routing patrons through the trail. Actors can come out of them If I want.

This new carving looked cool. You can see the giant 4 story head in the background to the right. As you came around this thing you would finally see the big one. Since it was new and that big it made quite an impression.

Some fog coming from the queue line.

I love this effect. Skeletons draped in cheese cloth and sprayed with glow in the dark paint. You have to just mist the figures because it's easy to go overboard with the effect. We rented a 400 watt black light to light the whole tunnel full of these.

This is the facade that will be gone. I want to increase the patrons visibility of the new one from a distance. The new one whatever it looks like will be on a raised platform and pushed back to give us more room in the queue line.
