I have two questions about advertising:

1) What are the methods that work best for you (radio, TV, coupons, billboards, banners, websites, myspace, newspapers, etc)?

2) How much do you spend on advertising per person that attends your event?

Hey Wipp,

We are not going to conferences this year. We are focusing all are extra funds on advertising instead of the show or conferences. Last year we spent about $5,000 on conferences so thsi year we are investing that into advertising and so we wanted to see what everyone thinks works best.

As for marketing, they say you should spend most of your budget on this.

You can build it, but if "they" don't know about it, THEY WILL NOT COME!

As an all time low amount spent by a haunt on advertising ,my business only spent 1/450th of what we took in on ads.
How can this be?

20 years in the same location.
Same name for 20 years.
OPEN almost every night for those last 20 years.(= 520- 2 week "seasons")

Having no money makes an ambitious person work and think more.
I utilized my own creative and artistic talents and strange ideas as far as "entertainment" went and as a result have something more unique and stimulating to offer the potential customer, which in turn brought me a lot of media attention that cost me nothing in any outlay of money.(That I did not have)
As was told to me long ago:"You can buy an ad in a newspaper, but they won't sell you the front page, but if you are odd enough or newsworthy , you CAN be on their front page." (For free!)
I also believe in entertaining people and making them laugh and enjoy themselves and their friends they bring along.
I put a lot of personal effort into this and adjust the house tours to fit whatever type of a person, persons or group is looking at me.
This old house is actually haunted and many people have been truly scared here and some wonder how I did "Those Things"?...so do I.?
I have never done the gorey or bloody in-your-face stuff here nor the movie-stuff
I rely upon acting(or is he really nuts?) and skillfull storytelling, except the stories are actually true.
Doesn't sound like "your"idea of a "Haunted House"?
I have recorded hundreds of hours of people getting terrified here... for playback when I'm in my wheelchair in the nursing home.
"Can you tell me where Mr. Warfield's room is?"
"Just follow the sound of people screaming and his laughing and you will be there."

Original question? Ads? They never seemed to generate much business for me. The real customers that are impressed and entertained spread the word, and this genuine advertising requires some time to take effect, but Nothing beats it or can come close to replacing it.

As you are located right on I-35, I would think the best thing to do would be to upgrade the facade! Not that there is anything wrong, it gains attention but, if it is ever changing for the better, it means things inside the haunt must be getting a remodel as well!

It shouldn't be too hard to get into the college paper and perhaps the towns paper if perhaps a big photo op charity facade clean up day happens, a celebration of the season to come.

Constant, regular reminders that it isn't dormant it just isn't time yet. Things that get into photos even on MYspace (actually your space) or get sent around on the web to drum up conversation all year round.

The pictures focusing on the facade identify the location the locals become familiar with. Never changing, just sitting there and only open at night in non business hours look like an abandoned business even though it is a going concern.

Man, if all the casino goers driving by thought they could bring their family if they don't lose the mortgage gambling. This takes regular facade performance art even if it is dragged out, constantly changed for no good reason just to use it as a bill board that would cost $4,000 per month!

You already have something the size of a bill board to use, the front of the building and lot!

Screw TV, Screw Radio, do the facade for the casino and traveler market, then any wayyou can crash the college circuit. Even if it means recruiting them for little summer get togethers (I repeat little and private) just to get the word out, just a pizza afternoon or cook out for varios college groups? Meet ups for the locals. All off season activities so where the place is at is not of question to as many people as you can inform. They will tell others.

From what Ive discovered in my area

Radio is still #1, then Internet

How much should your advertising budget be? roughly $2 to$3 a person which should include all aspects of your advertising goal, ex) signs,coupons,web,radio

If you have newspaper ads and especially if they feature a "Haunt Section" DO NOT let the newspaper use clip-art to represent your unique, truly indivual haunted business!!
I have seen newspapers be SO LAZY that out of 8 listed haunts on one page 5 of them ALL had the same clip-art image of a generic haunted house! (Shrunk or expanded in accordance with the cost of the ad)
Customers can sometimes be confused enough to begin with as far as the name and location and hours and admission prices don't disappear in your ads by being lazy or settling for "whatever" ??
If this is all they offer or try to stick down your throat , just buy a big multi-pack of toilet paper to satisy your urge to buy "paper", at least toilet paper has a real purpose. (If you can follow directions, that is..)
I really do believe that illreguardless of how much money that you do or don't have , standing out from the crowd is a big part of having a successful amount of customers find you and return, that same season or next.
We are in the "Entertainment" field. By it's definition, "entertainment" is mostly something somewhat "new" and different.
As a haunted attraction customer, what would you be looking for?
