I would like to know what qualifies someone to register at this hauntworld forum. For the life of me, I have not been able to find any membership requirements, and all indications are that anyone can join. The Fright Forum itself has a note under it that says, "Welcome to the industry's most comprehensive chat room on the internet. We invite you to ask questions, reply to subjects and assist haunters world wide and to learn from each other's experiences. You must be registered to post."

There is also a note at the top of the Forums that says, "If this is your first visit, be sure to check out the FAQ by clicking the link above. You may have to register before you can post: click the register link above to proceed. To start viewing messages, select the forum that you want to visit from the selection below." If you read through the FAQ, the only requirement that I can find is that you have to specify a username and password and valid email address, and "If you are under the age of 13, the administrator may require that a parent or guardian provides consent before allowing you to complete the registration process."

However, before my registration was FINALLY accepted after several attempts, on more than one occasion I received emails telling me that my "registration at Haunted House Forums did not meet our membership requirements. Therefore your registration was deleted." I am an investor of one of the haunts posted at this site and am very interested in how it compares to other haunts, which may lead to my investing in other haunts.

So without knowing anything about me (all that's asked for is username, password, and email address), why are you rejecting members? Based on what? Username? Password? Email Address? A bad feeling?

We're just as interested in haunts, etc., as you or we wouldn't be investing, and you don't have a clue who you are rejecting when you are not gathering any info about us before rejecting us. You certainly knew nothing about me when you rejected me. If you gave us a chance to post, you may find we have some helpful tips. I've been wanting to respond to the post that was upset about the investor not coming through because I know what it feels like to be on the other end of that. That's how long I've been trying to get my registration accepted. And I've certainly got ideas about how to make money.

Well, everyone. I guess Larry will be removing my post any minute now, so I hope you at least got to see it! Thanks for listening, and sorry to those others of you who have gotten rejected. Keep trying!

Do you have AOL. I heard it doesn't function well here?

Wow...talk about jumping the gun there.

We have no registration requirements. I had to turn OFF the automatic registration because we are getting way to many spammers. I have to look at each person and ask myself is that person real or fake.

Depending on the user name, the email address or the IP address I will either accept you or delete you.

It really is that simple.

No one is targeting you!

Calm down!

In answer to Nut, no, I don't have AOL.

And Larry, I don't understand what you mean by spammers. People are sending you spam by registering? How does allowing somebody to register hurt the forum? I honestly don't understand that. And I do know of another investor who still hasn't managed to get accepted yet.

So what are you looking for? My experience is that you're rejecting yahoo, ymail, and rocketmail (all the same since yahoo started running out of email accts and expanded to ymail and rocketmail). I just happened to have a road runner acct after you rejected my yahoo, ymail and rocketmail accts, but what about everyone who has to rely on free email accts because they don't have access to other email accts?

And are you looking for scary user names or what?

We have no control of the IP address that the emails are sent from.

Thanks for clarifying.

And Larry, I don't understand what you mean by spammers. People are sending you spam by registering? How does allowing somebody to register hurt the forum? I honestly don't understand that.

If I may add my two cents, I have had the same problem with my message board. Spammers can hurt a message board by registering in at least 2 ways.

1) Profile Content: Upon initial registration, a spammer can leave inappropriate text and links in their profile information. If a webmaster doesnít crack down on this behavior, his/her message boardís list of member profiles can quickly become inundated with hundreds of links to Viagra, porn and other inappropriate websites. Last October I had the same problem and couldn't keep up with erasing all the spam profiles.

2) Posting Later: Sometimes the initial registration isnít the whole problem. If spammers are allowed to activate their own accounts, they often come back and repeatedly post spam on the message board.

I want to add that I haven't ever seen any spam on this forum, and as Nut pointed out, I have been actively watching it for quite some time.

One of the biggest problems I see is that if you are not registered, then you cannot see most of the pictures everyone is posting of their haunts. Yes, we can click on the links to websites and view the websites if anyone posts that way, but any pictures attached in the forums (Darkness under Construction, all Build photos, glimpses at Magazines, etc.) are pretty useless to those of us that are deemed unworthy to meet membership requirements because we can't see any of those pictures.

So, yes, it has been very frustrating and I was torn about whether or not to speak up after finally getting accepted for membership because I figured I would be kicked right back out. Is there a way to change it so that non-members can at least see the pictures that are posted? They still wouldn't be able to upload spam that way. I didn't even know that was a possibility.

Yes there was a bunch of it...just ask the people who report them to me. It got more or less out of control so I just stopped letting people sign up automatically.

It is nothing against you...

But yeah I do look for haunted names, or something that looks reasonable.

Yes I do delete a lot of gmail because most of it is SPAMMERS!

Secondly I can look at IP's and if there is 6 signs ups from the same IP well I think that is a spammer as well.

Its part of running a board, sometimes you win sometimes you lose.

Well you are on board now so have fun!

Well, there's nothing to worry right now here... I have had some bad experience from other spammers and others like multiply sign-up accounts, you know, many things like porn smutters, home-based business opportunites, get-quick-rich-schemes, etc. I do have Halloween board, but I already PROTECTED all of them about 18 months ago! :D They never return back to my board again, ever! I'm sooo happy about that!!! ;) My board's version was 2.0.0, then 2.0.1 about 3, 4 years ago... this year, I already upgraded to 3.0.2 from 3.0.1

I USED to be part of this other board, but i think it crashed with all the spammers that it had on it what with porn spammers get rich quick schemes etc etc. But yeah this board is probably the best iv ever been a part and im proud to say that i am.

Now that I'm registered and there's proof that I actually am a real person :-D, is it possible to change my username? I'm not the owner of Haunts of Richmond (though I'm helping with marketing and advertising of their new haunt), so I'd like to donate this name to him. I have an idea of another for me. Thanks if anyone can help!

Even though I started this thread, I think that only Larry can help you with this one, so you will likely have to contact him. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that, so some of these other kind people on the forums will have to help us out with that. Thanks!

It took me a few tries to get accepted also, and I'm guessing that now it will be more difficult because of the spammer they just had to remove. For now, it appears that somebody needs to respond on how to reach Larry so that Haunts of Richmond can change his user name (see above). Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your help! I made contact with Larry, so it'll get fixed soon. I'm glad I get to finally post here... especially with the work we're doing on the new haunt. Radio spots are done... TV spot and website will be done soon. I'm busy working on getting sponsors as well... all this while helping map out and design the haunt. We'll have to work extra hard to get it all built in a month and a half! Fun times.

Warning! Don't change your email address after being accepted for membership to this forum or your membership will be deleted and you will have to start the application process all over again!

And many of us know that even if accepted the first time, which in many cases is not very likely, it may take 5 or so days to be accepted and that's if Larry happens to like the username you pick out even if it has special meaning to you. You could tell him about it if he would just give you a chance to post, but that would mean being accepted for membership, which we all know isn't likely if you have a gmail, hotmail, or any free email acct because then you may be a spammer.

Why not just give us a chance and delete us if we start spamming????? I've been a member since I think late July but for sure at least by early August, and I just lost all of my posts without any warning whatsoever, all because I changed my email address. I joined and first posted right around the time they were removing ChrisGM and somebody who shall remain nameless accused me of being him returning, so I quit signing in for a while after that.

It also would be nice if it didn't take about 5 days each time you apply to find out whether you are accepted for membership. I completely understand why some may be applying more than once. After that long, I think anyone would likely think they have NOT been accepted and would apply again.

drfrightner
09-29-2008, 04:59 PM
I dont' check it daily yes that is true. I don't have time to check everyday. I check for new applicants weekly, for example last night I approved another 15 new members.

I can't do it any other way, because spammers will take over the site, if I allow open sign ups they will sign up 50 people a DAY... since I closed that aspect down now they don't sign up as much but they still do.

This board is FREE, it cost you or anyone else not a penny... its just work for me!

It is a 110% thankless job/service.

I do the best I can.

I absolutely mean no offense, but have you ever thought of delegating some of these duties to others instead of doing everything yourself? It seems that you would be much happier and less stressed, and have more time for yourself that way.

It seems to me that you don't have to do every bit of "dirty" work. There have got to be people out there who can do it for you, and I don't think it would cost much to pay them to follow your guidelines for determining which members to accept.

This is just a suggestion to make your life easier so that you may focus on more important things like your family, your haunts, your magazine, making sure the ram/server issues are addressed, etc. It just seems that you worry too much about the little things and that may just lead you to an early grave, which nobody wants.

Just trying to help.

People, get real. If having to wait 5 days is the price for a spam free board, I will pay it. This board is great because we don't have to weed through all the crap you find on so many other boards.

If this is the biggest thing you find to bitch about, count yourself lucky. This whole thread is absolute waste of time. In the time it took for Larry to worry about this silly thread, he could have had you approved.

FearSeeker

OMG, yourself. That's the point. Larry wouldn't have to worry about this silly thread if he hired somebody to do it for him.

And you obviously haven't seen all of the other threads on this same subject, in which he is always very frustrated about this very matter. I was just trying to find a way to help alleviate some of his frustrations so that he doesn't have to b#tch about it so much.

He's the one who says he only has time to look at it once a week. He's got money to hire somebody to handle this for him so that this is one less thing on his plate. Then he can deal with more important matters like those I mentioned in my previous post. Forgive me for trying to come up with solutions for the frustrations he expresses repeatedly.

I should hire someone? LOL

Done deal... this forum now costs $50.00 per month! With all the gripes about the haunt tour costing to much, I wonder what I'll hear about this one. LOL

For the last time I do the best I can, and you must understand if I make the board open to anyone 100 spammers a day will create accounts and they will come through and they will post all over then I have to go back and figure out who to delete.

I apologize in advance to those who are legit and we delete but just do what everyone else does send me an email and we'll get you on...

Larry, I would not mind paying money to be on the boards. (Have I said this before? I feel like I'm have deja vu.)

The fee would not have to be exorbitant. How about $50 for the year?

Spammers won't pay, will they?

You might even be able to hire someone!

According to the latest numbers at the bottom of these forums, you currently have 541 active members. At $50.00 per month for each of those members, that would be $324,600 per year.

If that's what you think it will take to hire somebody to sort through the new member applicants for you, I'll be happy to apply for that job!

I think Fearseeker had the right idea and was trying to help you, and it should cost nowhere near that kind of money to go through the new member applicants regularly.
