View Full Version : Hot Wire Foam Cutters: First Attempt
03-30-2009, 10:07 PM
So, we tried out our Hot Wire Foam Cutting kit today... all I can say is that these things are awesome. If I had to pick out a flaw in them, it's that it takes a LONG time to carve mortar lines... but the look and textures they create are well worth the work! Here are some pics of todays attempt. -Tyler
PS: I only did about half the foam board because we're cutting off the other end to practice river rocks and tombstones. The pics are the 4'x8'-2" foam board... the cutter I used to create the grout lines... and the carved foam.

For brick grout lines Night,
I use a cheapo soldering iron with the tip taken off they are pretty close to the right width and they are 10 times faster than the wire tool, but The tool is very very useful.
those are looking really good Tyler. What did you use to hardcoat it?

It's not hardcoated... just used latex based primer over the foam. Our next attempt will have a hard coat on the foam! -Tyler

Looks great! I hope you had good ventilation or a mask. That stuff can be pretty strong! How much does that set run around $200.00?

We were in the garage when we did this... all three doors up and a fan going, so I didn't feel a need for a vent. mask. I think we bought the "pro" set, which contains EVERYTHING they offer... I'll have to check but I think it ran $699! But, it was very well worth it!
Thanks for the comments! -Tyler
