I am a college student and ever since I was 5 years old and went with my brother to my first haunted house I have wanted to operate a haunted house. Along with going to every haunted house with in a 100 mile radius (I live in North Suburbs of Chicago) with me, I began making a minimum of 10 dummies and lots of decorations in my yard when I was 8 and ran a haunted house in my yard from 7th grade to high school that had kids lined up down the block.

The closest haunted house to me is only 40 minutes and I live in a very populated area. More than anything, I want to one day finance and run a haunted house but I know I would need experience in a professional haunt. None of the haunted house websites have contact information other than actor applications and I was wondering what I need to do in order to work on a haunted house from set-up until clean-up. I am not sure if this is possible and this is something I would take a semester of school off for but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to help me get in this business. Thanks.

I would think you should be able to find contact information for haunts by you. Track down the addresses and knock on the door if you have to(I have had people do this to me). Worst case fill out the actor application and see what happens.

Most haunts are always looking for dedicated crew. I am sure you have used Haunted Illinois http://www.hauntedillinois.com/ if you are visiting haunts in the Chicago area. As was pointed out, fill out an acting app and let them know you want to be part of the build crew as well.

This is true. That is how I got into this business. I was 14 years old when I first started working for pro haunts as an actor. I looked up haunted houses online in my area and than I had my mother drive me to them so I could go talk to them in person. I just walked inside one one day as they where building. I asked them if they where hiring. I filled out an app and started working the next week!!
